Donggongon of Penampang

Donggongon!

Donggongon is the biggest town in the district of Penampang. It is connected to Kota Kinabalu city by a network of roads. The Pan-Borneo Highway crosses Penampang, passing through Donggongon via the huge Siga Roundabout.

There was another town years ago, a much smaller one. This was Kasigui. It had disappeared, having been destroyed by fire. The shopkeepers were allocated shop lots at Donggongon. People continued to call these shops "Kasigui." The name 'Kasigui' remained since that particular place is still called by this name. Eating stalls are still available there. The first stall was operated by a Chinese whom the locals called "Sapi" since most of his dishes were prepared using beef. He had a brother who operated a coffee shop at Kasigui. People called his brother 'Kalabau' because he sold buffalo meat noodle soup or ngiu chap. Kalabau moved to Donggongon after the fire. His children are still in the noodle business, owning two coffee shops.

There were only three blocks of shop houses at Donggongon in the past. All of the shops were owned by Chinese. Some of these Chinese married Kadazan wives and became very fluent in the language. Their children spoke Chinese as well as Kadazan.

How was it that these Chinese spoke Kadazan? That is the title of another blog.

How did the name "Donggongon" come about?
Even before a road was built to connect this place with Jesselton - Jesselton was the former name of Kota Kinabalu - Kadazan used to rest here on their way to and from their rice farms or when they visited relatives living at the other side of Donggongon. In other words, these people used to 'mundo'ong' or took a rest here.

So, it was said that because of this, people started to call it 'tundo'ongon' or a place to rest. As time passed, 'tundo'ongon' became 'Donggongon.' Perhaps, this was the way the Chinese who married native wives pronounced 'tundo'ongon'. I remember as a schoolboy hearing some Chinese shopkeepers call Donggongon as Tonggongon. It sounds almost like 'tundo'ongon', doesn't it?

People still make a stop at Donggongon
Even now, many people on their way to and from Kota Kinabalu make a stop at Donggongon. They may make a stop for a drink or a meal or to do some shopping before moving on. These include people staying in the interior like Tambunan, Keningau and Ranau. This town is the last major town between Kota Kinabalu and the interior. So, people stop here for a while to buy stuff they need for the journey or for their households.

And so, Donggongon continues to be a 'tundo'ongon' to this very day.

Where did the name "Penampang" come from?

Penampang comes from the word "pampang" which, in the Kadazan Language, means "rock". Pampang is a type of rock that is very hard.

St. Michael's Catholic Church is made from this pampang that are found in abundance at Pogun Savat hills. Its construction was completed not long after the end of the Second World War.

How or when the 'en' was added is not known to date. No one has volunteered an opinion. One possible meaning is "to cause (a person or thing) to be in" (Dictionary.com). Can this mean that the pampang is found in this particular place? Thus, Penampang? Who was responsible for inventing this word? Was it one of the early white missionaries such as Fr. Alexander Prenger or Fr. Duxneuner? Was the word in circulation among the people before it was made official? Will we ever know?

Penampang became synonymous with Catholicism and the stage where missionary priests were arrested by Japanese soldiers before they were herded into a lorry bound for Tenom. None of these priests survived to tell their stories.

Penampang was made the administrative centre of the Catholic Church in North Borneo when Fr. August Wachter became the Prefect Apostolic in 1927. But even before this, Penampang became a place where white priests liked to spend time to rest.

But when the Prefecture became a Vicariate, and later a Diocese, Penampang lost to Kota Kinabalu, formerly Jesselton, as the seat of the Bishop.

Penampang played a significant role in Kadazan nationalism even before the idea of the Federation of Malaysia was mooted. It continues to play an important role in the politics of the country in so far as the Sabahan people are concerned. The Kadazan cultural association, the forerunner of the Kadazandusun Cultural Association was born at Penampang before Malaysia.

Penampang again came into the picture, playing a leadership role when white priests and nuns were expelled from Sabah during the time of Tun Mustapha as the Chief Minister of Sabah. Datuk Peter Mojuntin spoke out boldly against the injustices to the Christians of Sabah.

Now, something seems to be missing among the natives of  Penampang.

KADAZAN

The word "Kadazan" refers to the Kadazan people and also to the language that they speak. It is similar to English which refers to both the people and their language.

The Kadazans can be found in almost every part of Sabah (even in Malaya and other countries) but notably at Penampang, Putatan and Papar. The language spoken by the Bundu-Liwan tribes does not differ much from the Kadazan Language. In Kadazan, the consonants "Q, R, X, W" and the vowel "E" are not used. Perhaps, "Penampang" is the only word that contains the vowel 'e'. At one time Inobong was spelt by the white priests as "Enobong". An English-speaking person may mispronounce "Inobong" as Ainobong. It is pronounced 'Ihnobong'. The vowel 'e' should be used in Kadazan because of the various ways words are pronounced.

Dusun use 'R' and 'W'. For example, loun in Kadazan which means the leaf (of a tree) is spelt roun in Dusun. The Dusun 'wogok' for pig is 'vogok' in Kadazan. "L" is used by the Kadazan while Dusun use "R". "V" is subsituted with "W".
